The Basement is Back

I have felt for a long time that the internet and I have a parasitic relationship; I take the information that I need (nearest InOut Burger?) and give next to nothing back. And with the exception of a few lame attempts at starting blogs--this is not my first--my digital footprint is nearly non-existent. And so it seems that now, now that I have found myself literally living in my parents basement, that I would like to spend some serious time on getting the know the internet all over again.

As a starting point, perhaps I should mention that I am not technically illiterate, at least not entirely. My first computer was an IBM Compatible and I knew the ins and outs of that beautiful beast at a very tender age. I first connected to the internet here in Vancouver using AOL software which connected us to our nearest ISP which was in Washington State. A month later, our parents were horrified to find a $600 phone bill for dial up costs. This was hard to explain at a time where almost no one we know was using this strange and unfamiliar technology. This does not forgive me however for wasting the last few years watching awful status updates tick by on my Facebook wall (many of them my own) and little else.

What I aim to do with this blog is not to yammer about celebrity diets or political viewpoints as these spots are spoken for many times over. Instead I want to understand for myself what is going on out there on the interweb. What are the mechanisms, the people, the sites, the blogs, the tools that are driving change or creating a stir in both the virtual world, the real world and the 'tubes' that unquestionably connect them.

So here we are, another self important blogger out there in the blogosphere. My next entry will be titled something to the effect of "What the eff is the blogosphere?"

Yours,

Tiffany
